Truth and Reconciliation: Blanket Exercise

Developed by KAIROS Canada, a coalition of Christian churches and organizations committed to social justice and reconciliation, the Blanket Exercise is an interactive workshop that invites participants to experience the history and legacy of colonization in Canada from the perspective of Indigenous peoples.

For this session, we will be using the elementary school script, giving educators the opportunity to experience the activity as it would be facilitated with their own students. Participants will:

• Explore a resource that can be used in their classrooms to prepare students for September 30 – Truth and Reconciliation Day, making the day more meaningful.

• Access additional curated classroom resources to extend learning.

• Engage in Q&A with experts to support age-appropriate implementation.

• Network with colleagues to share strategies, reflections, and insights.

Through guided role-play and reflection, educators will experience how elementary students encounter this powerful learning, deepening understanding of colonization, resilience, and reconciliation. The session also provides space for meaningful dialogue on the role of education in fostering respectful relationships and responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

This will take place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
