Honouring Remembrance Day at Blessed Sacrament School

On November 11, the community at Blessed Sacrament School gathered in prayerful reflection to honour those who have served and sacrificed for peace. The Remembrance Day assembly provided students, staff, families, and parishioners an opportunity to come together in gratitude and remembrance.
As part of the ceremony, the school unveiled a new Canadian flag to replace the well-worn one that had faithfully flown over the campus. The new flag, raised on this solemn day, symbolized renewal, unity, and our ongoing commitment to remember those who gave their lives in service to others.
Lieutenant Chaplain Jeremy MacDonald joined the assembly and delivered an engaging and heartfelt presentation tailored to the students. His message reminded everyone that remembrance is not only about the past but about the daily choices we make to live with courage, compassion, and faith.
The assembly included a moment of silence followed by the playing of The Last Post, marking a sacred pause in which students reflected on the meaning of sacrifice and peace. Families and parishioners joined the community in prayer and witnessed a touching presentation by the Grade 1 and Kindergarten students, who offered a special gift to Lieutenant MacDonald and to all veterans in attendance.
The Grade 6 and 7 students also contributed in a meaningful way. Earlier in the week, they visited the Gardens of Gethsemani, where they respectfully cleaned the headstones of deceased priests as an act of service and remembrance. This gesture reflected the school’s commitment to living out the Gospel values of respect, gratitude, and stewardship.
Remembrance Day holds deep significance within Catholic education. It calls us to recognize the dignity of every person, to pray for peace in our world, and to guide our students toward lives rooted in faith and service. Through experiences like this, Blessed Sacrament School helps young learners understand that remembrance is not only about honouring history, but also about shaping a more compassionate and peaceful future.
