Seismic Upgrades and Renovations at Holy Cross Elementary

Seismic upgrades protect students and staff during earthquakes. These projects strengthen core structures, reduce collapse risk, and support long-term safety planning. Renovations also improve airflow, light, and daily comfort. Strong buildings help schools operate without disruption and support stability for parish communities.

The school system continues to plan for future needs. Teams review buildings, study engineering reports, and prepare long before issues appear. Renovations focus on safety, health, and learning environments that reflect the mission of Catholic education.

The Holy Cross Elementary project reflects this commitment.

After several years of preparation and strong support from families and parishioners, the seismic and renovation project moved forward. Core Project Management directed the work. ETRO Construction completed the project in ten weeks.

The project included:

• Seismic structural upgrades

• New roof

• New windows

• New HVAC system with air conditioning

• Updated exterior cladding

• Enlarged library and media lab

• Renovated staff room

• Four renovated student washrooms

• Two renovated staff washrooms

• Additional improvements throughout

Students and staff returned in September to a safer and renewed school. The upgrades strengthened the building and created updated spaces for reading, research, and digital learning.

The School Blessing Ceremony

Holy Cross held its school blessing on November 14, 2025. This ceremony marked the completion of the project and honored the faith tradition at the heart of the school.

A school blessing is a rite of the Church, as outlined in the Book of Blessings, that invokes God's protection, grace, and assistance over the building, its occupants, and the educational mission it serves. In Catholic tradition, such blessings are extended to schools, whether new constructions or renovated facilities, to recognize them as places where minds are opened, souls are formed, and the spirit of the Gospel is nurtured, particularly in Catholic institutions dedicated to holistic human and spiritual development. This practice draws from the Church's long-standing custom of blessing buildings and spaces that support human needs and community life, as described in the Roman Ritual and its modern successor, the Book of Blessings. While the roots of blessing rites trace back to early Christian practices for homes and communal spaces dedicated to God, the specific order for blessing schools emphasizes their role in education as a vital extension of the Church's pastoral care.

Reasons for Catholic school blessings, rooted in Church liturgy and teaching, include:

• Affirming the mission of Catholic education: Blessings highlight the school's purpose in fostering not only intellectual growth but also moral and spiritual formation in line with the Gospel.

• Inviting God’s protection over students, staff, and families: The rite calls upon the Lord to safeguard all who enter, granting health, wisdom, and safety in their daily pursuits.

• Recognizing the school as a place of formation and prayer: Schools are set apart as environments where faith, truth, and service are integrated into learning, echoing the Church's solicitude for educational spaces.

• Uniting the parish community in thanksgiving: The ceremony involves teachers, students, administrators, families, and the broader community, fostering shared gratitude for God's providence in the school's life.

• Marking a new beginning for the life of the school: Especially after renovations or upgrades, the blessing dedicates the renewed space to God's service, symbolizing renewal and hope for future generations.

The blessing at Holy Cross, which can be led by a priest or deacon following the approved liturgical order, honored the collaborative efforts of planners, builders, families, and parishioners who supported the project. It also marked the start of a new chapter for the school community, entrusting its ongoing mission to divine guidance.
